A diplomat…

Concentration camp survivor…

Former French resistance fighter…

Died in his sleep… aged 95…

Homage… from President François Hollande

An exceptional man… with an enormous destiny… he dedicated his life… in the defence of human dignity.  Instead of the usual lust for needless battles… hate and greed for power… Hessel demonstrated a passion for human rights and dignity.  He was without prejudice and fought for universal values and liberty of man.

He was awarded several prizes throughout his career… and on 14 July 2006 was made “Grand officier de la Légion d’honneur“.

A young Stéphane Hessel on the right...

Indignez-vous !“… (Time for Outrage!)… his October 2010 essay… sold nearly 4 million copies worldwide and was translated into dozens of languages.  In the “The Nation” magazine… its March 7-14, 2011 issue published the entire essay in English.

In his essay Hessel makes a case for the French to regain their sense of outrage… as Resistance fighters demonstrated in World War II.  His reasons for urging “personal outrage”… the ever-increasing gap between the rich and poor… the need to re-establish free press… the need to protect the environment… the French welfare system… amongst other worthy causes…

His essay is said to have inspired many of the protest movements in 2011…  like the “Los Indignados” (the outraged) protest in Spain.

In his “Engagez-vous !“… (Get Involved!)… published in collaboration with the young French journalist Gilles Vanderpooten… Hessel appeals to his readers to save the environment… the planet… and to embrace a positive attitude.

In… an…

Excruciatingly… chaotic world…
