Katy Perry – A New Dimension..?
Katy Perry is floating… drifting through space…
Is she an alien?
An Avatar…?
She is gorgeous.
Her make-up is – heavy. Her outfits – extravagant. Outlandish. Ethereal…
Her voice, high pitched – spaced out.
She’s singing:
“They say be afraid
You’re not like others, futuristic lover
Different DNA…
You’re from a whole other world
A different dimension…
Take me, take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction”.
I first noticed Perry singing the song “California Girls” – whose video of the song included scenes of cream splashing out of her two “conic” breasts – and thought, ‘this could not get worse… – the girl is trying too hard’.
‘Horrible’
‘Terrible’
‘Vulgar’
‘Talentless’
However, the other day, I came upon the video of her new single “E.T.”, from her record-breaking album “Teenage Dream”.
She impressed..
She triumphed..
We shall give her a second chance…. as her new single has been applauded for its “darker and more mature theme”. We do agree.
Of course, one could compare her to Lady Gaga in this video. It has been said that she was influenced by her (Gaga, who in my opinion is desperately trying to come up with new, innovative, and outrageous ideas to shock, e.g. in the video of her new single “Born this way”). But, in the Performing Arts world, everyone is inspired by, and copies, other artists – so no criticism there.
If Perry continues on this more imaginative dimension in her music – rather than her frankly stupefying and terrifyingly childish and immature songs and videos, then…
watch out – Lady Gaga…
Katy could follow in the legendary footsteps of David Bowie, Alanis Morissette, and Freddie Mercury.
It would be rather disappointing to see her talent squandered on singles and videos like her earlier “California Girls” and “Teenage Dream”.
Having been influenced by Hinduism, through her relationship with her now-husband Russell Brandt, is a good thing – in hopefully following a depthier, possibly more spiritual path.
Their Hindu wedding ceremony, near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, seems to be telling – in her search for a more meaningful existence, as reflected in the words of her song:
And I’m ready to go
Lead me into the light”
The brilliant Italian who directed her E.T. video, Floria Sigismondi, also directed David Bowie, Bjork, and Christina Aguilera’s videos – a strategically good choice for Perry.
We will watch this space… hoping this magnetic talent will direct herself into a “new dimension”, that is depthy, original, innovative and distinctive.
The girl has potential…
Katy Perry,
Is the best yet to come…?
a.
