Fra Angelico…
“Fra”…
“Frate… “fratter” (latin)…
“Friar“… brother…
Known in Italy as…
“Il Beato Angelico“…
“Il Beato”… (the blessed one)…
Fra Angelico… (c.1400 – 1455)…
A major figure of the… “Quattrocento“…
He was a huge influence in Florence‘s artistic and cultural revolution of the 15th century… and initiated the artistic movement named…
“Peintres de la Lumière“… “Masters of the Light”…
His renowned mentors who influenced his work were his teacher… Lorenzo Monaco… Masolino… and Paolo Ucello… He himself taught and inspired the artists… Filippo Lippi… and Zanobi Strossi…
We were awed and inspired by the… “Fra Angelico and The Masters of the Light” exhibition… held at the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris…
This magnificent monument of beauty and great Art is the first French museum to pay special tribute to this exceptional artist’s work.
The exhibition, which is being held in partnership with major Italian museums, such as Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, and internationally famous collections, is presenting twenty five major works by Fra Angelico and the same number of works by some of his prestigious contemporaries.
This monk of… “rare and perfect talent“… learnt his International Gothic style art… a refined style which combined influences from Northern Europe and Italy… in Florence…
This style also influenced him to create works with great… spiritual meaning…
Fra Angelico… was an artist of many talents…
He produced masterpieces on a wide range of materials… Although he is best known for the frescos which decorate the San Marco convent in Florence, he was equally accomplished in the delicate arts of illumination and painting on wood…
Also a mastery of the new rules of perspective…
Panels and richly ornate works, such as the “Triptych of the Last Judgement“… (from the Corsini Gallery in Rome)… “La Madone di Cedri“… (San Matteo National Museum, Pisa)… and one of the panels from “L’armadio degli argenti“… (San Marco Museum, Florence)… were exhibited at the Jacquemart-André Museum.
Fra Angelico’s love of… elegant, contrasting colours… and subtle tones he chooses… enhance the elegant figures he depicts… Biblical episodes… and the… lives of saints.
His vibrancy of light… bright glowing colours… (red was very prominent)… the finesse of his compositions… the shaping and depth of the religious masterpieces he painted… made him an… iconic artist… who had an important and unique place… at the heart of the first Florentine Renaissance, which marked a turning point in European art…
We were… more than delighted… to visit the breathtakingly beautiful Jacquemart-André Museum… while being enthralled by the exceptional virtuosity and originality of this exceptional and unique…
