Aung San Suu Kyi… Heroine of… Burma…
Aung San Suu Kyi…
The lovely… heroine of…
Burma…
With the flower… in her hair…
Takes her… country… a step closer…
To freedom.
The sixty-six year old Nobel Peace Prize winner…
Won a seat… in Burma’s parliament…
Pulling off an impossibility… in the past.
The pro-democracy leader…
Miss Suu Kyi…
Who has been under house arrest… for almost twenty years…
Was once married to the late British academic Dr. Michael Aris… when she lived in Oxford.
Her jubilant supporters were shouting and cheering…
“We won“… “we won“…
They danced and waived with utter joy and disbelief… their red party flags… declaring victory for the people’s party.
Her amazing victory…
Has not been confirmed officially by Burma’s election commission…
Her party… the National League for Democracy… confirmed that she… has won.
Although Miss Suu Kyi and other opposition candidates… will have no power… nevertheless… she has given Burma’s poor and destitute people… living under military rule for forty nine years… hope.
Many people have died in the defence… of their belief in democracy…
They were utterly silenced… by the military.
However… her party insisted that Miss Suu Kyi‘s place in parliament will trigger the beginning of reforms the people have been praying for… for so long.
Officials of the NLD hope that she might become President… which was once an impossibility.
Myo Win… a party official suggested… that is becoming more possible since the army has become more lenient.
A… welcome step…
Closer…
To… freedom…
Burma’s sixty million population…
Once having been part of the British Empire…
Has “endured years of economic sanctions imposed as a result of human rights abuses”.
President Thein Sein… a retired general… has made reforms…
He has freed… political prisoners… signed peace truces with rebel groups… and most important of all… has begun direct dialogue with Suu Kyi.
Although she had declared the polling vote was not free nor fair… Suu Kyi confirmed that she… along with the people… are optimistic that her party will go forward towards gaining independence, freedom, and democracy.
Aung San Suu Kyi…
The… lovely…
The… courageous…
The… indomitable…
Heroine… of Burma…
We… honour…
You…
We… salute…
You…
Hail…
Suu Kyi…
Brave… heart…
of…
Burma.
